Then it was most likely well maintained.
I've read that the 2wd xj's are very capable with the trac lock. A good set of tires and driving skills should be all it needs.
I'm just going by what I've heard maybe a 2wd xj owner can chime in on this thread.

The problem with limited slip/ locked rear axles, in 2wd vehicles in the snow, would be the fishtailing.
I have driven quite a few vehicles with this option in the snow, when I lived in Philly. You get used to it after a while.
If you do get this truck, I suggest going to a vacant parking lot during the first snowfall each year. You can practice whipping it around to see how it will react. Kinda fun too, just don't get caught by the cops.

The only parkin lot to do that up here is the ski resort and they hate me cause I go drive up the slopes in the middle of the night and there security cars can hardly make it up to tell me to get out wahahhaa. But we will do that im still tryin to get ahold of the owner again.

I live in Oregon and when the chains required signs are posted a rig with 4 wheel drive doesn't have to chain up. I do not know if California will let 4x4s go without chains or not, but that could be something to consider.

i ran a trac-lok in the snow for a season once. it works, but you gotta drive differently with it. it was super easy to kick the back end out. i think it makes you a better driver though. once i got offroad with it, it sucked and acted like an open diff.

those are good points, and they can make it 4wd with a t case and a d30 axle which isnt too much work if they really needed it.
i dont think she would have to worry about mileage if shes working 6 miles away lol

Having "learned" ( more trial by fire then anything) to drive in snow, I would look for a 4x4 XJ. Don't know how much you get by you but here we get a decent amount ( seen up to 4 feet on the ground in a 3 day period ) and we aren't allowed to use chains, after all our roads suck with out that added damage. 2wd makes life fun but I am guessing that your mother wouldn't want to learn how to drift it around a corner. Either that or buy it and make it 4x4. Just my thoughts from Michigan.
