It won't make a difference if it is specific or not. If it is wired correctly it just takes longer than the plug and play.
Did you check the voltage at the lights? And verify you have a flasher capable of handling the extra bulbs?

thanks for this thread, panel was not that hard to get off, on my way to napa to pick up. not plug and play tho. autozone could get it here but was wasnt in stock for my 89.

Most U-Hauls have the converters on the shelf since their rental trailers need to work with whatever people drive up in.
