Default trailer lights

I just found out that the plug in adapter is not working. I don't have brake lights or right turn lights. I've already cut it out and spliced the wires directly to the plug that clips in the wire loom (minus the converter "box"). My question is, which wire(s) do I splice the brake light in? Right now I have it spliced in with the brown wire (running lights). Is this right?

You have to use the converter box, or add two more lights on the trailer for turn signals.

Thanks guys. I learned that the hard way. I went ahead and bought a universal one from auto zone.

No I do not. I can probably get a pic sometime tomorrow. Since I already had the plug in harness, I was able to buy and use the universal one with no problems. The wires were already there and just needed to be spliced together. It was $12 or $13 dollars vs the $35 for the vehicle specific version.
