Search on ebay for "train horn booklet". Theres a guy that sells plans for $15 on how to make them from PVC fittings and they are just as loud as the real deal and nearly as durable. I think it costs around $50 to build 3 or 4. Its what I'm gonna do when I get my air tank bumper put on. You can make them what ever size you want too, even big enough for a ship horn.
Heres his youtube video:

Kinda funny he mounts his on a golf cart though, he didn't glue one of his bells on too and the resonance blows it off. Most states have laws about using horns this loud on highways though, so check your laws, or just take the tickets.

thats awesome i might just have to get one of those, and as for being illegal, well technically your normal horn is illegal too, just as long as you are using it for the right reason haha, so i could see if you used the train horns to scare people (which i feel like every single on of us would do) than you would probably get a ticket, but i think if you honked at somebody for not paying attention or cutting you off than your fine
Recently here in WA, our moronic populous past a law saying that you can ONLY use a horn to prevent a collision...if someone is spacing out for 5 mins while the lights green, you can't legally use your horn.....I know..

Couldn't you just ask this question without searching the dark dusty files for a thread that's been dead for 9 years? Sheech!
I have done extensive research about horns and cars are designed to be 2 complimentary notes the get peoples attention without being harsh. Trains and large trucks use 3 or more horns designed to be obnoxious to warn people of an approaching hazard. The best is 3 with a note-and-a-half between them. Old GM horns used to have the musical note molded on them and the trick is to find one that's between them. On my 67 Camaro, I used 2 6v horns from a 55 Chrysler and one of my Camaro originals and they sounded just like a CSX freight! Scared the F*** out of people! Add to that, I had a bullhorn on my CB radio! I'd blow the horn and watch people's head snap around looking for a big truck, then I'd shout thru the bullhorn "MOVE IT!"
You could attach them to your roof rack or bottom of the hood. Not much room in an XJ. Mine were electrical and plenty loud.

“Horns and warning devices - (a) Every motor vehicle when operated upon a highway shall be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet, but no horn or other warning devices shall emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle. The driver of a motor vehicle shall, when it is reasonably necessary to ensure safe operation, give audible warning with his or her horn but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway. No vehicle shall be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a vehicle any siren, whistle, or bell except as otherwise permitted in this Code section and Code Section 40-8-94. No vehicle shall be equipped with a theft alarm signal device which is so arranged that it can be used by the driver as an ordinary warning signal.”

I'm confused, as a relatively new member, I thought it was better to search as much as possible before asking a question that might have already been answered 50 times. This guy does a search but has a question along the same lines and attaches it to an existing thread. Help me out with protocol as I will never be a forum expert well versed in the do's and dont's. Maybe I just violated a couple of protocols by asking this question on an old thread and not related to the original subject?

Most forums don't like zombie threads.
It's especially annoying when the person raising the dead asks a question directed at someone who posted X years ago.
Searching beforehand is ALWAYS the right thing to do, but if you find an old thread that is relevant, the preferred approach is to start a new thread (always with a good descriptive title, and no begging ["Please help!"] of course) and link to the old thread.
So, how to link to the old thread?
Each thread has a unique URL, so you can just copy the URL in the address bar of your web browser, OR, better yet, (or maybe, also) select the specific post in the thread that you want to link to. Notice that each post is numbered, like this:
That post number is a hyperlink. So, if you have Firefox, this is easy. (Chrome probably has the same function.) Just right click on that number, from the menu that pops up, select "Copy Link Location".
How to link to a particular post..
Now use the forum link button (looks like a couple of chain links) to insert that URL into your comments.
Now, you have all the pieces to put together so that it looks something like this:
And that, my good sir, is the classy way to do it.
No zombies, but you have the old thread linked so that folks who are volunteering their time to help you can easily see exactly what you are talking about.
And thanks for asking! Here or anywhere is a good place to ask good questions.

Hey, groovy guys and groovy gals, I found an old dead thread that addresses part of my question. There is one post that confuses me, though. Can you tell me if the deframbulator goes on the left of the skoozletwizzet or on the left of the carmbomus?
And that, my good sir, is the classy way to do it.
