Tranmisson shifting problem
I have a 96 Cherokee with a 4.0 I-6, automatic. I changed the trans fluid when i got it and it wasent burnt and there was no shavings in the pan. just did it as a maintenance thing. but at higher speeds on the highway it doesnt seem to want to shift into higher gears, until you give it a little more gas then it seems to shift like 2 gears or something because it lags it bit and just downshifts. also about 3 times now ive been driving and the pedal will just go to the floor and it will redline like its in neutral while in drive and wont move at all once you come to a stop. shut it off and right back on and its fine and shifts smooth. is there a sensor or soliond or something that is on its way out thats causing this? thanks!

the slipping out of gear into neutral could be worn bands??? could try some lucas ATF transmission fix. its suggested to give it 100 miles or so to let it do its thing.
my old jaguar had a problem with the shifting on the highway. shifts were hesitant and clunky. it turned out that the throttle return spring on the throttle body was not closing all the way. its an easy and free check at least to play with the throttle body and cables to ensure you're getting good movement. I was about to call a transmission shop for replacement when I finally found the issue. but you're right, I'd pull over, turn the car off, then back on, and things would be good again. so bizarre.. I had to get under the hood and catch it in the act.

You know I never thought of that, I love Lucis stuff to I'll have to pick some up and put it in. And I'll have to check out the cable and spring to, haven't done that yet. Would just cleaning it and lubing the spring possibly help things?

sounds like a band slipping. never got into a aw4 but id assume you can adjust the band from the outside of the case. would need a torque wrench that measures in inch pounds tho.

alldata says no band adjustment in the aw4. couple questions tho
1- when you changed your fluid how much did you change? did youu just drop the pan or did you have a full transfusion done? did you change the filter?
2- since all this happening have you tested fluid? run it til its up to operating temp(8-10 miles) pull the drain bolt just enough to catch about a cup of fluid and check for non-metallic particles (clutch plates, band material) and burnt fluid. check for clutch and band material by rubbing the fluid between your fingers, if it feels gritty your looking at a rebuild.....
