Tranmisson shifting problem

Model: Cherokee
I dropped the pan and put in a new filter. I've pulled the dip stick and smelt it to see if it smelt burnt which it didn't but that's about it. It didn't smell burnt but there isent much in the dipstick so I'll deffintly drain some into a cup and see what's in the fluid
