Tranny Leak
Hello all, just got a 2001 cherokee sport 2wd with 77k on it. its in really good condition, runs very well but has one noticable leak in the tranny, and it comes out of the output shaft/seal (if thats what you call it). I'll get a picture up when i can. But is the seal replacable without tearing into the tranny itself? Its a slow leak, just a drip here or there. Not very much. So any ideas?

Typical Aisan-Warner tailshaft seal drip.
Replace just the seal for a quick-fix... expect to be doing it again next year.
For a long-term fix, you need to replace the output-shaft bushing. Remove the extension housing, drive the old bushing out, drive the new bushing in, drive the new seal in, and reinstall the housing.

You will need to mark (centerpunch) the nut where it lines up with the yoke so you can put it back to the same preset for the thrust bearings.
If you don't have access to air tools, you will need a l-a-r-g-e crescent wrench to counter-hold the yoke while you use a very long cheater bar to break the nut loose on the yoke.
Good luck... you will be drip-free in no time
until the case starts leaking at the mating surface right behind the bellhousing... but you will learn to ignore that one.

The AW4 might have a slip-yoke.
I sometimes confuse the AW4 that is in the Cherokee with the AW7 that is in Toyotas (I play with both).

It looks like a slip-yoke to me. Disconnect the drive-shaft from the rearend and it should slide out of the trans. Have a pan ready to catch the fluid that's going to spill out. R & R the out-put shaft seal. Replace drive-shaft. Drink beverage.
