Unhappy tranny replacement (NEED HELP PLEASE)

i have a 89 cherokee xj with a 4l 4x4...the tranny is a #30-40 LE , i have aquired another tranny out of a 91 that is #30-43 LE.
Can they be swapped? or is the splines different? i read somewhere that they are....just want know if this can be done or not.

found this
looks like the 91 is different and its a 2wd tranny

Identification
The AW4 as found in Jeep vehicles has a length of 25-3/8". The AW4 has a removable bellhousing with a port for the crank position sensor. The case is smaller in diameter than most automatics, and features cast-in ribbing down the rear half of the case.
The earlier Jeep AW4 has a 21 spline output shaft for connecting to the transfer case input shaft. With the release of the HO 4.0L in the 1991 the AW4 was upgraded to a 23 spline output shaft.
The AW4 may be identified as a model #30-43LE for 2wd versions and as a model #40-30LE for 4wd versions.

i found the same thing as you, that is where the question came from,,, but the tranny was removed from a 4x4, so it had a transfercase hooked to it when it was removed(i was there for removel), but i would hate to remove my bad tranny, to find out this doesnt work....(Vehicle still drives, but get me to and from work at the moment)

well count the splines on the 91 tranny if its a 23 spline it wont work
if its a 21 it will

the years you are dealing with have lots of variants so it hard to say for sure
