Default Tranny swap BA-10 to AX-15

How hard do y'all think it would be to switch out the BA 10/5 tranny for the ax-15 tranny? I've read that the ax-15 is stronger.. what do y'all think?

Can I keep my clutch and fly wheel set up?

moved to oem tech:

Even though it is supposed to be an almost a bolt-on replacements, there is a number of the small things that I'll needs to have and know. So this time I want to be prepared and have all parts ready _BEFORE_ I start the work. The info on the Internet is various but not consistent. What I'm trying to do here is to compile a full list of all the parts and tools and knowledge one needs to do this swap.
I'm going to put down as much info as I have, some of it _might_ be incorrect. PLEASE make comments and I'll update the main most as we go along.
Maybe we'll make a tech write-up from this post?

1) First of all, we need a donor AX-15 transmission. Let's review the years and models:
94-95 4.0L YJ: Pros: external clutch cylinder. Cons: more work needed to adapt the external clutch cylinder to the existing setup. details & part info needed
91-93 4.0L YJ: Pros: just re-connect the clutch assembly Cons: internal clutch cylinder is a P.I.T.A.
TJ: Yes you can use TJ, at least up to early 2000
Cherokee: Even though the transmission will bolt to the engine, the Transfer Case clocking is off by 20-something degrees. Might not be an issue with enough body lift.

2) Transmission mount needs to be used from AX15

3) Bell Housing. For this swap we'll need a new bell housing: AX-15 will not bolt to the BA10's bell housing. But bell housing from AX-15 will bolt to the 4.2 engine. As mentioned above, 93-95 Bell housings have external clutch cylinder.

4) Clutch. New clutch assembly for AX-15 transmission is needed. Old BA-10 clutch cannot be re-used.

5) AX-15 linkage & shifter for transfer case are needed: original ones from BA10 will not properly fit AX-15. I've heard that AX-5 can be used here Comment / confirmation are needed

6) New AX-15 will have 23 spline/long output shaft. Old Peugeot BA10 Transmission has 21 spline output shaft to the Transfer Case. So the input shaft on the transfer case needs to be changed to accommodate the 23 spline shaft on the new AX-15. Note_1: if you're swapping the whole transfer case instead of the input shaft, then newer transfer cases do not have vacuum switch to control your front axle vacuum motor. Solution: Use Posi-Loc or unscrew the electrical thingy from T/C and insert vacuum from older T/C. Note_2 (not confirmed): The early AX-15s are 21 spline output. No idea where the cutoff is, probably 90-91?

7) Something is different about pilot bushing? I'm not sure - please comment.

8) On BA10 one of the motor mounting screw was 3/8"-16, and the other was M10-1.5 On AX-15, both screws are now 3/8"-16

9) Crossmember. The spot for the transmission mount cushion is 3/4" to 1" lower on AX-15 crossmember (1991-1995). Or, (by gutthans) Like the tranny linkage, this is best decided by trial fit. I used a skid from a 91, a mount plate (to the tranny) from a 97, and a poly aftermarket bushing to connect to the skid.

10) Shifter. I fit 3 different ones, AX15, BA-10, and early AX15. All will work with modification that can be done with drill, hacksaw, grinder, and BF pliers. I kept the standard one on as it cleared the tunnel best with my body lift.(by gutthans)

11) Flywheel. No change of flywheel required UNLESS you retro fit MPI.
That's all I can think of right now. What else am I missing from this list?
some good treads

sums it up pretty good. 93 and up ax-15s are the way to go IMO, parts are more available, like slave and master and hose assembly all one piece, will need when doing this swap.

35k miles on my swap and still running strong, just be sure to swap the clutch to the same year the tranny (recently fixed this problem i found last month, more than a year after my swap), and or bellhousing is. reuse the flywheel, for renix CPS relucter sequence.

I got a ton more info from my swap, but more in the morning im sleepy....and the boss is telling me to come to bed....

I payed $150 for mine, and tore it apart and checked it. it was good.

one thing I am still trying to figure out is the transfer case linkage. I took everything off a 95 year, which was also a 2 door, 4.0, 5 speed. and none of it works. seems like the unibody bracket is 1 3/4" too far forward. I plan on making my own custom linkage.

after about a year of looking, I was just about to plunk down 400 on a "low mileage" junk yard one in El Paso when I found mine on Craigslist, so far its run good, it has a slight hesistation to go into 3rd, but if I shift smooth and slow its fine.

not bad for 50 bucks

is this your DD or can you wait?
if you cant wait, talk to Richard Little at a little4x4 company in Chaparral, he has a few of them last time I called over there, he wants alot of money though

Thanks for chiming in! Also, if you can get a ride over to tucson they have them cheap in AZ and the jeep scene is 10x's what it is here. whenever I go back to visit the parents I pick up all the parts I can afford
