Trans help
So I had to replace the rear main seal on my 93 Cherokee. After replacing the seal I pulled the pan and filter on the trans to replace them while the tranny was pulled out, now after everything is back in I have a knock sound coming from the trans and it will not shift at all. When going through the gears the Rpms will change and I would think it’s shifting but then nothing happens.

If its knocking at the front of the transmission, doublecheck the flexplate bolts. Make sure theyre tight. Some put a little blue loctite on them to make sure they dont back themselves out, which does happen. The flexplate itself isnt cracked, is it? Is the engine and transmission bolted together securely? Do you have 4wd? If so, the linkage may be out of adjustment. Go back over everything. Sometimes we miss things.

If I am reading correctly, the transmission was removed from vehicle for some reason? Was torque converter removed from transmission, or allowed to slip forward on its splines (it has two sets of splines)? If so that could be the issue.

Yes, I made the mistake of getting ahead of my self on the rear main seal and thought it was like most ones I’ve done as was behind the flex plate, I didn’t realize it till after I dropped the trans and I don’t think it’s cracked and I did pull converter out.

Seems like you're gonna need to take it apart and reseat the converter.

When installing converter, it slides on first set of splines and will stop at second set, rotate converter until it slides onto second set and is fully seated.
Other simple things to rule out are; make sure transfer case is not in neutral, transmission wire harness is plugged in securely, check shift linkage on transmission to make sure it is connected.

That's a good question that I have no easy or definitive answer for. I suppose you could lift one rear wheel off ground, support axle with jackstand, crawl under and rotate rear driveshaft back and forth by hand. If transfer case is in any 'drive' position you should hear and feel it stopping the driveshaft.

So I went to pull the transmission today and it felt like the convertor was all the way in. I did notice in the fly wheel there was a small magnet that I think came from the old cps from when it broke. I’m hoping that was the noise issue. Im not sure why it still will not go into any gears.

Checked the dimension using the photos provided and measured it?

So good news I’m thinking the noise was that magnet on the fly wheel got everything back together and it’s gone and I checked the transfer case if being in neutral and it was so now it’s up and driving thanks everyone for the help!
