Default trans just threw up......

Just took the jeep to town and when I returned home the trans was pucking fluid. Looks like a front seal. Should I take it to a trans shop or is this gonna be an easy fix. Looked online for a front pump but can't find anything. Thought I would go ahead and replace that while it was out.

First off ANYTHING 4wd is a much bigger pain in the azz than an old chevy rwd turbo 350 say. If all off a sudden its leaking from the front pump assembly--Outer o-ring-gasket-bushing and seal U can probably assume there was a massive fail somewhere. Usually in front pumps its the bushing the converter rides in that is the culprit allowing to much fluid coming past the bushing and past the seal.
Unless ur a pretty good mechanic or have help that is I wouldn't tackle it. You really have to find out exactly where the leak is coming from -some pics would help.

It was pouring out the dust shield. Only when its in gear. I had a trail of fluid all the way down the driveway and down the road. Just had the pan fixed 2 weeks ago. Along with some other leaks. And trust me that Chevy was 4wd. And your right it was a pain in the.......... here's a pic. Just a few drops left.

I can't open the pics for whatever reason but it seems you have something wasted up front there. I have seen every possible thing that could go wrong in the pumps including taking out the converter and the hub is totally busted off yet it still ran.

So what is your gameplan for the fix ?

Idk. Guess I will just take it to a trans shop for a total rebuild. Hate to have it spend the night away from home. Also hate to take a chance on a junk yard trans and waste money and time. Well gotta break the news to the wifey.

You can buy a brand new leftover tranny for i think is about $1300-1400. there are a couple of threads talking about it -another member Excess something researched it you can find his posts somewhere.

Also if you have more than one tranny shop-talk to all of them and get some feedback on their reputation. tranny's are not something u wanna do 2x.

Thanks for the info. We have a few. Is there something I need to tell them to make it stronger? They got to make something to beef it up. Those ones you discussed come with a warranty?

Nothing i can think of to beef it up except maybe some heavy duty clutches/steels for the drums. the AW4 seems to be a pretty good trans if taken proper care of.

most any rebuild or new tranny should come witha 1 yr warrenty possibly a milage limit. Just to show u how sic some shops are my FIL just took his Dodge ram to 2 trans shop -1 told him his trans needed $500+ worth of work -the other 2 adjustments and a fluid-filter change $150.

Some people like to have their trans rebuilt because it never gave them any problems EVER so they feel better about the odds of having something go wrong which makes good sense.

For the price I would look into the new tranny--if you go that way do know that your old trans is not JUNK and the shop might be interested in keeping your old one for lets say $200 off.

Well I found a shop that's gonna take on the job. 550 includes all the parts for the front pump. And labor removing and installing.
One shop told me to buy a new one. Lol. Told him I just wanted this one fixed, he said and I quote " it is what it is".

You sure your outgoing cooler lines aren't plugged or anything? If they just replaced some askets recently I'd check to make sure the dipstick tube isn't jacked up- maybe run some fluid through to an oilpan underneath to pinpoint the leak... unless you're sure its the front seal. In that case I think it's a $10 part and involves dropping the transmission. Which isn't all that bad.
