The vacuum lines don't have anything to do with internal case function - they're for the mode indicators on the IP (triggered by vacuum switches) and the front axle actuator (vacuum diaphragm - may be overridden with a cable control or simply locked into fully engaged - it was done away with sometime in 1992/1993.)
Leave the vacuum switch in place to plug the hole, put caps on the vacuum nipples on the switch, and call it good.

I have a 96 grand cherokee Laredo with 4.0 engine and need to know what all years wil
I have a 96 jeep cherokee Laredo with 4.0 engine automatic selec trac and the other day it started slipping up hill under acceleration like BAM then a few miles up the road it pops out of gear and grinds, however 4 wheel low works fine,.. but I need 2 hi, I don't off road much.. I took linkage off and manually put it in each gear on transfer case but grind is all she does so it's fu€kd I assume my question is what all year models will bolt up and work?

242s arent had cases but considering your knowledge level I'd stick with a 231
FWIW they used the 242(hd) in the HMMWV. You know the "Hummvee" Its plenty strong enough for a XJ.
