Default Transfer Case Grinding Noise?

I have a 2001 XJ Sport, 4-speed automatic transmission, NP231 T-case.
So a few weeks ago, I couldn't even shift the transfer case from neutral to 4L. Never had a problem with 4H. So I changed the fluid and I sprayed the linkage down with WD-40. I was able to shift into 4L and it worked fine at first. But just today I decided to test it out again. At first it seemed fine. But after about 100 feet it slipped out of 4L and into neutral. When I put the transmission in neutral and tried to pull it back into 4L, it made this god awful grinding noise. So I put it back to neutral then to 4H. I have yet to have a problem with 4H or 2H. If it helps I just changed the transmission fluid and filter as well. I don't know what it could be or if anyone else has had this issue with the NP231 as well. Anything is much appreciated, thanks.

It sounds like you need to adjust the transfer case linkage or better yet replace it with an aftermarket one. They were not that great even when new the design was crap.
