Default Transfer case grinding/whining?

I have a NP242 transfer case and recentely ive been hearing some strange noises If i step on the gas pretty hard whether im in 4wd or not, it grinds for a second then stops. Then while i was driving down the road, I heard a whining that was constant. It comes and go's. I really dont know what is wrong cause it sounds bad. Im gonna check the fluid soon. So what could be wrong besides that?

I would start by checking the fluid level/condition

Yes, I need to find a big enough wrench for it first haha, but anything else?

I would take it out and tear it apart. after u put fluid in it and see if that stops the noise.

Yeah they are simple. Any mechanically inclined person can do it. Lots of info online of how to rebuild one

So I put my finger in the transfercase felt a part and there was sorta like blackish fluid on it. Should I feel a lot of fluid and should it be a different color?

Thanks, I got some in there. Seems like it made a difference but I'm still hearing some weird noises
