Transfer case interchange
This is my first time on this site. Idk how to actually ask and post a question. Anyway I have a 89 Cherokee and I'm pretty positive it has a 242 T transfer case and I have a 96 Cherokee that has a 231 j transfer case. The 231 j doesn't have 4low.
The 242 T is perfectly fine. Basically I'm asking would the 242 T swap into the 96 and take place of the 231 j?

Yes, assuming you're talking automatic transmissions, the spline counts on the input shafts won't match. If your 89 is a manual, then the spline counts would match.
Probably easier to troubleshoot the lack of 4L on the 231. It could just need the shifter adjusted.
