Default Add Stop Leak for Transfer case leak?

I have a 242 TC that has developed a leak since I changed out the fluid. Been trying to track it down and might have got it tonight.

In case it is still weeping any opinions on using a stop leak product? I wouldn't add snake oil to the tranny but the transfer case doesn't seem like it would be as sensitive or am I wrong?

Since you just change the fluid and nothing else, is either the fill plug or the drain plug.
Wonder how hard it is to find the leak on a transfer case.

Why would you use stop leak? Just fix it the right way.

I agree with this. The drain and fill plugs have o rings on them which you may have punctured during removal/installation

Thanks for the replies I'll address all in one.

Fixing it the right way will involve pulling the transfer case since it is definitely not the fill or drain (which do not have o-rings). Awful lot of work for a weeping case that works great and once pulled I'm in for a serious case of the "might as wells".

I think I misled a little. The case must have been leaking awhile. When I drained it only had 600 mL fluid and should take 1300 mL. So it has either been leaking bit by bit or leaked to a certain point then once down no further.

Now that its cleaned up a bit I think its leaking from the input. Not really visible with TC in place but coming from up top. The trans mount is prob collapsed a bit and is stressing the seal. Once I put in a new trans mount the now deformed seal will prob leak that much more.

Unless it gets alot worse I guess I'll keep my eye on the fluid level and live with it. My orig question was basically if the TC doesn't rely on on sensitive clutches then a little something to swell the seals should not hurt it but not totally sure how TC works .

Is it leaking out of the speedometer sensor? Mine was. All you need is an o-ring to fix it if so. Check out my thread "transfer case module leak"

I wish it was but no. I saw your thread and so put that on my list of checks but the area around the speedo is clean and dry. Thanks though.

Only thing I have not completely eliminated as a problem is a clogged vent but I doubt that is the problem.

Default Transfer Box

Hi jatoxio

I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 that exhibits the exact same symptoms you have outlined below, did you finally change the gearbox mount and the transfer box seal.

Mine started as a small insignificant leak and the Jeep garage changed the transfer box main seal, and since the issue has escalated to a full leak exactly as you have predicted. To date the garage appears totally lost as to what to do, so your viewpoint is gold dust.

Best regards

Graeme
