i was under my jeep new to me. It is 98 cherokee with shifting inside 2wd 4wd N 4low but the transfer case is a 242 witch has 2wd 4 parttime 4fulltime N and 4lo. The inside dosent match up is there a way i can go abut so i can be able to go to 4low. Because obvously they did a swap. is there away to modify it or do i have to get all new shifter and linkage.

 

The lever inside is just a lever and the shift bezel is just a reference, you should be able to pull the lever and shift through the positions. If it's not going into 4L you may have to adjust the linkage via the rod/nut on the linkage itself.

Edit - Also the "gate" needs to be switched - which actually may be the missing piece for you.

You will probably find that you'll need some herculean efforts (lots of PBBlaster, heat, etc) to get the linkage apart if that Jeep has spent any amount of time in our part of the country. I'd consider doing a boostwerks linkage upgrade - which is actually what I'd do if I ever start to have linkage issues in my 95.
