The latest on this from ExxonMoble:

Thank you for the response.

Based on the information that you provided us on your vehicle, AS LONG as your vehicle's transfer case is NOT model NV247, you can use an automatic transmission fluid meeting Mercon.

You are correct that our full synthetic automatic transmission fluid meeting Mercon is the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

Our apologies that the Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is not shown as a recommendation for your transfer case on the "Find the Right Oil" tool on our Mobil website. We will try and get the website updated as soon as possible.

And the people at Mobil are just discovering this through an email from a consumer. Yes.

LOL... how awesome would that be?.... a different flavour for each part when it fails... forget a shop's fancy diagnostic equipment.... *sniff sniff*... hmm bacon? Man that's gotta be the transfer case...

Tractor fluid, eh? Seems like it should work. Viscosity-wise, its thicker than Dexron, particulary when cold.

I need to change the fluid in the tractor again with something other than the "Universal" stuff I used last time, that is way too thick when it's below zero out.

The 47re behind my cummins bites hard when in 20s been running the chevron thf 1000 for about 100k since I revived it with some good parts.

I won't run the cheap tractor fluid from farm and ranch stores. Its probly just vegetable oil.

Its acasional down to -5 ish here. Ill let the truck warm up for 20-30 minutes or till I see the trans temp gauge move.

I pack a gallon in tge jeep on trail runs. If something happens itl work in everything except for the brakes.
