Yep. I don't recall the wiring diagram offhand, but it's a simple logic signal and should be easy to hardwire. Then, the switch can be reassed to something else.

R, Reverse
N, Neutral
O, Overdrive (all four gear ranges available)
D, Overdrive Lockout (only 1/2/3 available)
1-2, only first and second gear available (and I don't like how it forces back down into First gear.)

Ideally, it should have been P-R-N-O-D-2-1, but you can get "manumatic" shifters for the AW4 - or you can build them yourself - so you can have "automatic overdrive" or full manual shifting, and TCC lockup available in all ranges (since the AW4 is shifted using electronic solenoids, it's perfectly doable.)

I think the confusion here is that I'm referring to how the trans shifts automatically when put in D and driven.

And I did try the manual selection yesterday on a trip and the converter would lock in 2 and 3 if selected specifically.

Yes. Remove the switch. It has 3 wires. One is black, the other has a stripe and another is tan. Make a 3" jumper with a male spade on each end and jump the striped wire with the tan at the harness plug.
