transmission might have died on me
Alright yall, my knowledge of transmissions, t-cases and axle are very slim. Today i was on my way to work and i was comin to a stop and my 96 xj was jumpin and skipping almost like i stalled a manual transmission; i got about half way down the road and my automatic transmission his holding one gear and slowly down shifting to no movement. I got my jeep pushed into a parking lot and tried to put her in gear again and sure enough she moves forward and back but is grinding. I don't know why an automatic would grind or what would cause it to hold a gear and then not have the will to move forward. The transmission has fluid and is actually overfull (it was right at the full mark last week), the transmission filter and fluid was changed last year by the previous owner. What could be my issue? Could it just be the torque convertor? Could it be the transfer case or the whole transmission?
Thanks in advance,

Did it do this once stopped?
How about in P,R,N,3,2-1?

What does no movement mean: did the Jeep decide to stop moving, or did you let off gas and brake to a stop?
What gear was it holding? 1st? Or did it upshift but with odd behaviors?
put her in gear again and sure enough she moves forward and back but is grinding
Whats the grinding noise sound like? Broken teeth kinda sound, metal scraping metal? Other?
Have you gotten under it and inspected the flex plate or speed sensor?

when it just stopped moving it seemed like it shifted itself into neutral, don't know what gear it was holding, best guess is 2nd. As far as my grinding sound, i fired her up today and put her in everygear and even messed with the tcase shifter a little and got no noise today, it's odd for sure,

update: moved my jeep to where i normally park it and goin forward 10 feet it didn't make a sound, but as soon as i throw her in reverse and started backing up that same metal sound i heard thanksgiving came back but it's more of a tick now. I'm still at a lose of what it could be, anyone have any ideas?

I'd definitely say remove the inspection plate on the tranny and take a look at the flex plate. Sometimes the bolts loosen over time and the bolt holes wallow out. Look over the flex plate and look for any cracks and try tightening the bolts. They can cause some weird issues and can cause a variety of different sounds.

well after a weeks worth of yalls help and still not finding the main source of my issue i had my XJ towed to aamco and they called me later saying that my torque convetor is going out and some internal parts of my transmission were shot, and that my tranny had been burning the fluid for a while now....probably from me doing burn outs also found out that i have a toyota transmission in my XJ, how does that happen, aint there an unwriten law about a jeep havin yota parts in it?
