Default Transmission to park

1995 4.0 auto cherokee
While installing a neutral safety switch I managed to shift my transmission out of park but my shifter is still in park. it will not shift back into park and now the transmission and shifter are not aligned. Simple method to manually get a automatic transmission back to park?

At the front of the shifter is an adjustment for the cable. You'll need to remove at least the Insert, if not the whole Center Console to get to it. Shift it down into a lower position, hit the adjustment and then put it back into park.

It may be possible to just manually shift the auto into position with multigrips on selector pawl or shaft

In theory this should work, if you did not disconnect any cables during your work..if it went out, it should go back in

Maybe not, but I would try before removing my console

You may need to loosen the NSS nut and bolt. That might be preventing you from getting the shifter all the way back into park. If you tightened the center nut on the NSS before snugging the other bolt, that can also bind up the shifter. If you bound up the shifter and forced it, you may have broken the plastic parts where it connects to the drivers side of the transmission.
