Parts are at the end of the process called "finding out what the problem actually is".

Before all this, you said you put a new motor in. Has it been driven without issues after this, or is this the first trial of driving after the swab?

1) you say some fluid came out the torque converter when you took it out. Took what out? Or do you mean when you went for a drive. Where was is coming from?

2) did you check your ATF level (and color)?

3) try shifting through the gears manually. No issues then?

4) your gauges don't work either. That is a clue. Your gauges stopped working at the same time as your shifting issue?
I don't just start throwing parts at problems either. But I had the same symptoms and researched a solution for a while before I came up with the solenoid issue. Here's the thread I found to help diagnose the issue.

OP,

During an engine swap, or any workin the engine bay, ground connectors may have been overlooked.

Check the ground connections at ground G101 (illustrated below). You'll see that the PCM and TCM are grounded here. A bad (loose) ground for the PCM will cost you your gauges and cost you your TCM function.

A quick check of the trans fluid level can be accomplished when the trans is cold. This checks the Torque Converter and the trans pump.

With a cold trans, set the parking brake and place the trans in Park.

Remove the trans dipstick, rag it off, reinsert and check the cold fluid level. It should be near the top of the full line.

Rag off the dipstick again and set it aside. Start the engine then immediately reinsert the dipstick and check the fluid level. It should have dropped to near the bottom of the dipstick, which indicates the Torque Converter and trans pump are working. If the fluid level hasn't dropped to the bottom there may be something wrong with the Torque converter or pump.

If the fluid level dropped off the end of the dipstick, add small amounts of fluid until the level on the dipstick is up to at least the add mark.

Recheck the fluid level hot by driving the Jeep at least 15 miles to heat up the trans fluid, then check the fluid level with the engine idling. The fluid level should be near, or at, the top of the full range.

Well yes usually the T/C needs to be filled but you say you lost very little fluid so possibly not it. When replacing or refilling a transmission I don't it this applies or not but here is what you need to do. Pour fluid in till it shows on the dipstick then start engine and run the trans through all the gears forward and reverse leave it running check again then same process till it shows about a qt or so low. Then take it out and drive it several blocks at the least, bring it back to shop make sure its at operating trmp and fill it up to the full "HOT" mark or hole.

We had to change out trannies at the track sometimes between rounds and this is how my builder told me he wanted it done except we had it on jack stands for the run out.
