Transmission Question
99 XJ
4.0L V6
AW4 Auto
230,000KM
So here is what happened. Hit the highway. Going 60 mph, revs climb, speed drops, obviously transmission. Limped to pull out. Oil all over front of Jeep, Trans cooler fitting at Cooler let go. Not a drop left on dip stick but no real burnt smell.
Called a friend. He came and with car, went back to my house and grabbed a truck to tow it home. My buddy jumped in Jeep. He put it in neutral, engine off, but left transfer case in 2 HI.
Dragged it home. Replaced hose, added 5L trans fluid which put it way asbove the Hot Full line. When I start it in Neutral fluiud level does not move on dipstick. No engagement in any gear. Transmission joined all dogs and went to heaven? Seems like fluid level should still drop a bit. Can TC be pooched? Is the TC in these self filling assuming it pissed all the oil out.

TC is filled separately. Make sure it's not in neutral now.

I'd be worried that you ran it dry, then towed it with the xfer case in gear which means no oil pumping to the bearings. Probably fine for short tow though. I don't think I've ever prefilled a used t/c, but it could be bone dry enough that you're not driving the pump. I'd keep cycling the shifter through the gears and see if it the pump will pick up some oil. You might need to drop the pan and clean out the "filter" if you burned the clutches enough to plug up the screen.
