Default Transmission Swap

Hey guys,

New to the forum here.

My mom has a 96 Cherokee with ~290k mi, and a blown transmission (whenever the transmission downshifts, it seems to loose all pressure until the jeep is restarted). I'm planning on putting in a used tranny this weekend, but was wondering if anyone had any tips/advice for this.

Its a 96, I6, 4x4. I figured it should be fairly straight-forward. Is there a write-up of this anywhere by chance?

Thanks,
Mike

Try to make sure u get a 96 since there seem to be many problems withthe PCM and the such. get a guarantee for say 90 days. the AW4 should be a direct swap but watchout for the pressure plate and anything that DOESN'T match up EXACTLY>

'96 for '96 would be first choice. '97 can work with some rewiring of the harness. '98 and later have a 2nd VSS, so I wouldn't mess with 'em.

The TCU from '92-'96 is the same, so the trans should be, but I would take a '96, '95, '94 etc in that order.

Do a little more searching as to what is interchageable. There is a thread here on CF somewhere that spells it out.

Good to know. Thanks guys! The place I'm getting one actually has 2 that came out of 96's, so I should be good there.
