Default Transmissions Interchangable???

Hi I have a 98 automatic tranny and i am trying to find out if the tranny is interchangable with jeeps older than 97 because being in hawaii the only ones to be found at junk yards are 96 and older if there is any help on this that would be great

as long as it is a 23-spline it should work. Make sure its a 2/4WD trans depending on what you ahve, as the housing is different.

Yes they are interchangable I just used a 87 tranny in my 95 the only thing I couldnt use was the transfer case due to Vacuum issues.

1991-up should be 23-spline, so that takes care of that.

However, the AW4 vehicle speed sensor (at the rear of the transmission) changed with the introduction of OBD-II in 1996, going from a one-lobe sensor to a four-lobe sensor. I do not yet know if the two rotors can be swapped - I'm reasonably sure they can, but I have yet to confirm this.

Default 6 to 8 cyl tranny swap.

Would tranny from a 1990 inline 6 work on a 1993 eight cyl or is it a totally different tranny.

I'm pretty sure that's different - the 1990 I6 (presumably XJ/MJ) would be an AW4, while the 1993 V8 (ZJ?) slushbox would be something like a 42RE or 44RE. The 4xRE is a Chrysler box, the AW4 is a Toyota box adapted to AMC. And the 1993 V8 will be a Chrysler engine, which uses a totally different bellhousing pattern from AMC anyhow.
