Trying to determine the cause of my cracked torque converter. AW4.
1987 4.0 4WD Cherokee
Have a fluid drip from the my bell housing. I assumed front pump seal, so today I pulled the tranny to change it. When I pulled the torque converter and started to inspect it, I noticed a crack that is on the shaft going into the pump. You can see markings on the shaft that seem like they're caused by the pump seal getting pretty warm.
I don't know much about auto transmissions, so I enlisted the help of some old guy I know that has some vehicle knowledge.
He told me that it's highly possible that the cause of the hot seal and crack on the converter is that the band/bushing on the pump is shot, and that not long down the line my new converter and seal will be bad again due to this, unless I change the bushing on the pump. Is this a high possibility? Or would I be ok just replacing my converter and seal and putting everything back together?
I read the removal of the pump in the AW4 factory service manual, it doesn't really go into much detail. Is this a difficult removal/install? I'm on a time crunch and need this finished tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks
