Or partly. Either way it's worth checking out.

Rocket mouse milage can be improved depending how far down the rabbit hole an individual is willing to go. 393 page thread on one of the ways to get there. LINK

Agreed to an extent... within reason. I mean every vehicle has its cutoff point of how good you can actually achieve in the real world.
But at some point you'd probably be getting gains that are so small that you're not getting bang for your buck anymore. So finding that middle ground is probably the wisest course of action. At least IMHO.

Mine has something going on because I am averaging about 10 MPG.

is it possible that part of it may be your gearing? You're running even larger tires with the 4.56 gears at least in your sig. Mine currently has the 3.55 in the rear

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've read that in a few places before.
Looking at the comparison youtubes 1 hole versus 4 holes ( impressive difference in atomisation of the fuel mist!), I convinced myself to do this swap. Despite it seemed defying logic to think THIS would not make a difference, it really made nil noticeable difference.
I gave up on finding something that would significantly improve fuel consumption in a thirsty car.

Keep your tyres a tad higher in PSI and easy on the gas pedal. All else will be grains imho.

4.56 gears with 35s, it certanly lowers the fuel milage over stock but I would expect at least 12-13 with my setup. Full sized trucks with V8s on 35s get better than 10 MPG.

A buddy of mine had a late renix era with the 4.0L with almost the exact same setup as yours including the 35s and he told me he would avg 8-10mpg.
Now that being said, I don't know if that was corrected mileage for the tire size.

yeah... I've thought about it myself... because I know my driving style won't change just because I get a little better response. I know the rolling resistance is better when you've got it right where the tyres should be....but I tend to have mine a little lower just because the roads where I live now on this side of the pond are horrid at best for the most part..and I don't like to bounce all over the place with the solid axle setup in our old school jeeps....a huge difference from my home back in Adelaide.

New shocks. Definitely get new shocks...
they help with the cool look, as well as off-road capability.
You are driving a CHEROKEE, NOT a PRYIUS...
Please stop trying to Nancy up our channel.

As mentioned, anything that effects the forward motion (kinetic energy) of the vehicle. Friction is a killer for MPG. Stuck calipers, e-brake adjusted poorly, tires psi is low, bad wheel bearings, transmission internals slipping (I guess technically that's lack of important friction so you CAN move forward and not sit there and spin the clutch/friction plates, torque converter etc, bad and/or tight u-joints, differential issues (lack of proper lubrication to reduce friction)... etc etc etc... you get the idea. Also there cold be internal issues with the engine thats not allowing it to perform at its full potential, so its still pumping in the same amount of gas, but the engine isn't getting the full usage of the combustion, so... leaky exhaust valves that allow combustion pressure to exit before it should, blow by in the piston rings. you see where this is going. How many of these problems does you XJ have? More than likely none of these, but think about the effects even if you had just one of these problems, or even two....
And yeah the shape of the XJ,,, while these things do have a type of manly, off road, utility vehicle look, they were made for taking care of business, not commuting to and from work on the highway and trying to save the planet by getting 30mpg....
unless you do what i did and swap the front clip of your XJ with the front clip of a new Corvette Stingray for improved aero-dynamics.... I'll post pictures later.

I put new front seats in mine and the mileage went up by 1. Not sure if it was the weight difference or the improved aero from the old seats having holes in them and the new ones being good.

This is exactly why Im looking for a nice pair of smooth leather seats to replace my old fabric ones. I do have one small cigarette burn in the front left side of the passenger seat, so I'm thinking that is causing drag with all the wind that is coming through my window seals........

We can laugh all we want but most of the mods that guy's an gals do to improve fuel economy if their DD XJ's are real common on our trail rigs.
Long tube headers for better torque (also improves mpg)
Electric fan conversion to switch off for mud holes and switch constant on for climbs and crawling (also reduces parasitic loss which improves mpg)
12 hole injectors for better throttle response (also gives better atomization for more complete burn which...)
Hot ignition for a little more peak power less fouling and better chances of a restart after a tip over(improves burn at low rpm cruise too)
Disc brake conversions because it improves breaking (and reduces rotational mass which..you guessed it.. improves mpg)
