Our town has a local buy/sell page, about 6,000 members. This turned my head. My old 90 is falling apart! So am I, but I think I will outlast my 90! Any and all feedback is welcome! If I stayed with Cherokee, really, mine does not have allot to offer as a doner. (if I got a Better Cherokee). Pitted windshield, 280K on engine and trans, 25 years of dents all over, interior well used, (shot), about anything the PO, (or myself), can touch is shot. .....latches, seats, door, switches, all just hanging on.

MECHANIC SPECIAL. 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Automatic, straight 6. Here's the problem. 1) It won't start...it's turning over, but won't fire. I was told it needs a crank shaft sensor and it will probably start. 2) The transmission is having issues. It could be a number of things, including needing a new transmission. However she's a beast. Body is in great shape. Interior is in very good shape except for one tear on the driver's seat. They are leather seats. This is perfect rig for a Mechanic or someone who loves Jeeps. It's got about 267,000 miles. $500

Jeep has too many miles to invest a transmission in it. Engine could have more issues than CPS.

There are better Jeeps out there with half the miles for a little more money. By the time you fix this one, you could have had one of those.

I won't own a Jeep without an AW4.

What would be really cool is an early 93 ZJ with a 4.0 and AW4.......

This thing is pouring oil out of it. Look at all the oil stains on the driveway in the pictures.

Personally I don't like the GC's But that's just me. If it didn't need so much work it would be good to fix and flip. But you wouldn't get back what you would have to put into it.

Considering those 3 specific members and their recommendations, I'd pass as well.

Looks like it might make a good beater. Once the few problems are worked out it may prove reliable transportation. I often consider the way the interior has been treat to the way the rest has been maintained. If it really is as nice as in the picture and can be bought for 350 cash it might be ok.

Thanks guys. Yea, I have doubts as well. Yea, I noticed the oil in the driveway too. Pete, are you saying it doesn't have an AW4?

Still...if it had current tags, she takes $300, and I drive it away after a CPS...I'm still chewing on it...

Whoops..Edit! (I removed some incorect info)... This might be right< (from Wikipedia)....(early production ZJs used the AW4 - the A500SE (later 42RE) replaced the AW4 during the latter half of the 1993 model year)

I thought ZJs had the AW4.

I had a '97 ZJ that I bought in January this year. I drove it 1,000 miles, checking it out and working on it before I gave it over to my daughter.

I liked it better than I thought I would. She liked it, too. She had driven my '87 Renix for 5 1/2 years as her DD previously.

Unfortunately, she hit a Tahoe almost head on in July and totaled it out. She went into labor 2 1/2 days later and delivered her baby boy.

I bought a 2006 Grand Cherokee 65th Anniversary Special Edition about 5 weeks ago to replace the '97. It is a very nice Jeep.

My mistake Firestorm..I mixed up numbers again, (and edited) Dyslexia or add, or both! Pretty sure I nailed down a 94 WJ does not have an AW4.

MMMM and the name of the baby? Bam Bam?

Probably should have been. His name is Cayden.

Models that used the AW4:
1987–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0 L
1993–1993.5 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ) 4.0 L
1987–1992 Jeep Comanche 2.5 L
1987–1992 Jeep Comanche 4.0 L

Chrysler used TorqueFlite transmissions in the great majority of ZJs it appears. Maybe they thought the AW4 was too lightweight for the heavier ZJs?

The AW4 is rated for more torque than the 42RE that was used in most 4.0L ZJs (and WJs). It is likely that Chrysler just wanted to use their own transmission to reduce costs rather than buying them from Aisin. The only thing that is surprising is that they didn't do the same in the XJ.

The AW4 is rated for 450 ft-lbs. max input torque versus ~220 ft-lbs for the 42RE.

Not surprising the AW4s hold up so well since they are incredibly over built for the application while the 42RE is just barely adequate.

Come to think of it, that '97 ZJ I had for just 5 months had a vibration in it that I strongly suspected was in the transmission. Probably the torque converter.

OK, I corrected my mistake above...Guess ZJ went from 93 to 98, (from Wikipedia> "early production ZJs used the AW4 - the A500SE (later 42RE) replaced the AW4 during the latter half of the 1993 model year"

She has come down to $350...

For that price you could throw a crank sensor in it and either drive it to see what other issues it may have our junk it/part it out and make your money back.
