There was a company that made a turbo for the 4L. But it has been years since I heard their name or even thought about their product. They produce horsepower on the wrong end of the HP/Torque curve for the largest share of the community. A turbo under most circumstances doesn't offer enough advantages in that sweet spot for the 4L to offset the disadvantages of turbos.

Well I got the motor from my buddies house today at about 1:30pm with 1000 miles on it. Got home to find the UPS guy leaving my house, flagged him down and he said he left some early xmas presents on the door step. Pulled the ZJ and trailer into the driveway, walked up to the front step and found all my stroker parts sitting there. Backed the trailer into the garage, hooked up the engine and put it on the engine stand. Going to start ripping into it tomorrow to get it ready for the stroker parts. Then looked at 505 performance. Called the wife into the garage to show her the website and asked her the question I have been waiting to ask her, "do you mind if I order this?". She looked at me and then looked at the computer screen and said, whatever makes you happy dear, its your xmas present . I think I'm going to take her out to dinner tomorrow and finally do the oil change on her WJ. I will start taking pictures of the build soon. I have a few friends coming over the next couple weekends to help me with it and since I have to wait 2-3 weeks to get my turbo in the mail, I will have plenty of time to take pictures. I'm so excited I could scream like a little school girl, lol

i agree a supercharger is probably the best trail power adder for the jeep. i am building just an overall beast. So i cant really say what is best for your rig. Any power you add to a jeep is great. Whether is n2o, supercharger, turbo, or v8 etc. etc. Looking forward to seeing the turbo build btw! i have to get rid of a vehicle or two before i really tear into the jeep though

i'm really liking this thread i wish you the best of luck on this build i'm about to do all the major gaskets on my 4.0 and i have been tossing around the idea of a decent cam and header cause i think i'm going to have to do a driver side motor mount when i pull the ehaust and intake off because of a blowen head gasket, blown rear main seal, so i get to do all the major gaskets sounds like a good time for a cam

You got an awesome wife man, haha.

I made the mistake of buying an AK-74 one day, and now I'm not allowed to buy another gun for like two years, haha.

Start a build thread for sure, this thing sounds like it's gunna rip!

Yeah she is awesome. She likes the whole offroad scene and so does my 2 year old daughter, all she does all day when I'm in the garage is walk around, grab tools and tries to work my Jeeps, I love it. My wife doesnt mind if I spend money on my Jeeps just as long as all the major stuff is taken care of first you know, bills, house payment, etc. To be honest my daughter probably gets more stuff then my Jeeps do but its all good. I think after the whole turbo/stroker build is over with, I am going to modify her hot wheels Jeep

Lol, nice. Mine is in to offroading too, even though I scare her some times with the stuff I drive on.

She's kinda the same way with money, but for some reason, when it comes to guns, it's crack down time, if you know what I mean, haha.

That's cool that your daughter is in to it like that. It's not the right time for kids for me and my wife, but we definately look forward to that day, and totally raising them right, showing them how to fix their own cars and respect guns and all that good stuff that kids don't learn anymore.

Being new here and only having 6 or 7 posts I'm a little leery about jumping in here but there are some real iffy comments being posted here. First, saying "boost breaks stuff" is like saying horsepower and torque break stuff. If you have weak links in your setup then you either strengthen them, resign yourself to replacing them on a regular basis, or just skip the whole power adding thing altogether and be content with what you have.
Second, someone said they were planning to get a turbo that didn't spool below 2500rpm. That shouldn't be hard because most wastegated turbos don't.
As far as crossing water...mount the turbo higher or don't go into water more than 5 feet deep I'm assuming that if you are offroading then your Jeep is sitting pretty high already. Water would be about as likely to crack an exhaust manifold as a turbocharger's turbine.
As far as power bands and torque curves, last I heard, cam profile and gearing affected that more than a turbo would.
And low end torque. All tractor-trailer rigs use turbocharging. Think they don't need low end torque to get their load moving?
For a strictly offroad Jeep I can't see how using a decent sized turbo would be worthwhile. Boost isn't linear. If you have a turbo boost onset is going to come in a rush. Kinda like 150hp one second and 200-250 or more in an instant. Best to have your wheels straight when that happens.
For the average Jeep that sees as much or more street as trail a smaller turbo would be great. Spools quick, gives you a nice little kick.
And they do make boost controllers if you wanted a little more on the street.
Just my 2 cents. Or nickel, quarter whatever lol.

Its funny you say that, because cracked exhaust manifolds are very very common on XJs. Given its more because of weak welds than water crossings. but driving through several feet of water doesn't help anything.

I try my best to avoid doing that Zack. Living in Houston it's hard to do sometimes
Weak manifold welds would help explain why I get so many ads for exhaust manifolds when I search ebay. Are those any better than OEM?

the ones with flex joints should be. I'd buy one if I didn't have plans to buy myself a nice header

Nasonguy, yeah I was thinking dual batteries but there is a website called modified powerwheels.com or something like that and the Dads ont here go crazy with these things, Leds, lift kits, the whole 9 yards. I have been looking into doing whatever to her little pink princess Jeep cuz she loves driving around the yard in it. Its pretty hard to get her out of it when its time to go in, most of the time she wants to bring the Jeep inside the house. She cracks me up sometimes about it. But with her walking around the garage and picking up my tools and trying to help me with my Jeeps, I want her to learn how to do her own oil changes and not be afraid to be a girl but be able to hold her own in the "vehicle" world. I dont expect her to learn how to rebuild 4.0Ls but if she does, that would be awesome, lol

yeah, some people do some pretty crazy things with those power wheels.

I'm really grateful that my wife is learning to work on cars with me, so far she knows how to change her oil, change a flat (that has saved me a lot of time, she has a habit of driving in to medians on left hand turns...) and to my surprise, she can actually hack her way through a brake job now.

If we have a daughter, it's even more critical I believe to teach her how to work on a car, or at the very least, have a general knowledge of vehicles so she knows what the mechanic is talking about and when he is BSing...

Now that is cool. And it could come in handy when she gets a little older and you have brakes to bleed

Anybody consider using a rear mount turbo? If you put the turbo in the trunk then it takes care of the water issue... mostly Only downfall is more piping.
