has anyone thought of a remote mounted turbo?
http://www.ststurbo.com/universal_turbo_systems
this turbo can be mounted basically anywhere along the exhaust. This would save room in the engine compartment and get rid of the heat problem. And it operates around 4 psi with a power button that bumps it up to 9 psi. And its cheaper than all the turbo upgrades ive seen people do to cherokees

1. turbos get hot...real hot, and under your car....theirs alot of water when it rains....i can imagine a fan blade spinning at thousands of rpms inside a very tight case doesnt like it when it suddenly gets cooled down by cold water....
2. front tires kick up dirt, especially if you offroad, then all that dust is now going into that air filter...air filters dont filter out all the dust, and it then gets clogged much faster...but if you move the intake, like a snorkel, thats not a problem.
also not much room under an xj with all its drivetrain

both things this turbo kit deals with
1. its comes with an oil pump that you hook up with the rest of your oil system. and it runs around 500 degrees cooler than most turbos
2. and you can get a snorkle kit for it for only an extra 100 bucks

just put a supercharger on it. its bolt on and comes in a kit if you want a bit more power. jeeps arent a speed machine and arent for going over the speed they can do stock. the 4.0 motor is plenty fast. if you want more power get a turbo buick. my dad has one in his ****** jeep and its plenty.
and if your worried about gas mileage and commuting... just forget it this is a mod for a toy car not a daily driver imo

Hmmmmmmmmm once you put a Turbo on a jeep it looses it's identity. It's OK if you only plan to drive Miss Daisy, but a SC is much more effective and a heck of alot cheaper.
Don't want your XJ to be a Firebird wantabee do you?

I'm not big on mudding my rides.
That said, I do know that any serious mud racer wants as much horsepower as they can muster.
Same deal for sand dunes.
Of course both would want 4WD.
Scary yes, but that's racing!

as for what 96 xj posted you can get one for alot cheaper by not paying retail price and getting some of that stuff used.
as for superchargers i see them alot on craigslist and other forums for sale. i saw one a few weeks ago for $600 but usually about 8-1000 bucks seems to be the norm for a used one.

if your looking into getting a little more power have you looked at taking the crank out of a 4.2 and putting it in the 4.0? i believe it turns it into a 4.6 and you dont have to mess with as much as it would still be naturally aspirated and people say it gives you about 300hp and obviously more torque because of the longer stroke. imo 300 is plenty for an xj

(4.6) the right way
4.2 crank, rods, .30 bore, new dished pistons, cam, port and polished heads, injectors, adjustible fuel pressure regulator, and adj. map
will give you 270-295hp for about $1500-2500 "depending on who ya know"
very reliable power
(4.5)
crank, rods, injectors, and adj. pressure reg. you looking about 230-240hp and can be done for 6-800$

it takes a little more than that but yeah it is a good upgrade. i have the crank and rods already i just havent got around to doing anything with them.
If your guna crack the motor and do all that work you might as well go with the 4.6 done the right way that way it will be fresh and last forever
getting off topic though so try to stick with super or turbo chargers in this one
