i havent had the battery catch fire on me (knock on wood) yet but i had the same problem with my 89 cherokee. Tracing all the wires i checked if power was going to it, it was good... then i checked each bulb, and they seemed all good... checked the wires and redid some wires that looked like they were really bent, done!! And after all that i was going to give up... Checked the ground, replaced the wire with a larger guage, replaced terminal and found a new ground spot, and bam!! all lights working

Hope this helps

the ground wire to which location? by the battery there should be one that connects to the chasis... and where the rear lights are its by the driver rear side under the cover.
