Default Gold Valley Run in Lakes Basin Recreation Area

I'm going to do this run Saturday, 8/27. Is anybody up for coming along. The snows should be melted by now and this will be a great run to do.

We will leave from Bassets, where you can gas up and get food, drinks and ice if you need it, at 10AM and drive to the trail head.

This looks like it could take about five hours on the trail to complete, going through remote areas of the Lakes Basin Recreation Area.

It passes by the massive Four Hills Mine with old rusty mining equipment and many open mine shafts.

It ends at the Plumas-Eureka State Park with a indoor/outdoor mining museum and ghost town site.

Oh hell yeah... I hiked the Sierra Buttes fire tower last year and camped at Sardine Lake, simply beautiful out there. If I'm free I'll be there! I'll probably camp overnight out there too.

Hey, is this the trail your talking about?

Gold Valley trail is a 7.8 mile trail. This trail is easy, at first, despite numerous stream crossing. After 1.3 miles you will come to a clearing on the right, and an old wagon road on the left. This is the beginning of the most difficult section. There are no turn outs for the next 2 miles. The trail climbs a narrow, brush lined stream bed. Water running down the stream bed can make this section very muddy. As the trail climbs uphill, constant bouldering and tight turns make this section a real challenge for even the most experience four wheel rider.

Sounds like fun, you get anyone else interested in going? Looks like I'll be camping out at sardine lake with friends.

The trail that we are going to do is called Gold Valley and it is 18.6 miles long and can take 4 to 5 hours to run. The guide book, Backroads and 4X4 Trails says ‘it is a moderate trail. Much of it this route is easy but there are several miles of rocky terrain. Stock SUV’s can get through, but they need low range gearing, high clearance and skid plates.’ Your info must just be part of the trail I have read about but it all sounds great.

So far not much interest but that is not stopping Lisa and I. We will leave from Bassets Station at 10am to go to the trail head.

This is going to be great! The area is beautiful and the weather will be warm. I was up there a month and a half ago and there was too much snow to do anything so I am really looking forward to getting back.

See you tomorrow!////////////////

Well here are some picture from our day in Gold Valley. We had a great time and the wheeling was excellent.

My buddy finally got me the pictures he took... this first one is him telling me I was low on duct tape, he was obviously worried.

For those that are wondering, the big board is for stumbling across lakes like this... we where wheeling in Lakes Basin Recreation Area after all.

Thanks Skidder! Nice shots. I like the one with you paddle boarding on the lake.
It is so beautiful up there in the Lake Basins Area. We need to do more exploring around that area.
