Under dash fuse box 1996 xxxj (Australian)
Hello Guys,
Still tearing my hair out ! everything checking out ok but still no start, but it did yesterday?
Has anyone got a schematic and listing of what fuses are in the underdash fuse box?
there are photos here of the same type that is in mine ,but many are missing (or not used)
My progress is weird, a fully charged battery put in yesterday showed 8.6 volts today !!
Like I have a hell of a short some where? according to my analogue ammeter it appears
to have a parasitic drain? I think 1.5 amps is serious and needs serious investigation,
Yes I have continuity tested all PDC fuses and relay sockets ignition on and off
It seems like the ASD decides to kill it after starting so I am thinking of wiring 85 relay sockets
to a switched ground via an illuminated rocker switch ??? Anyone care to comment ?
for three months now it has not run for more than a couple of minutes each time when it starts at all?
NEW STUFF
cam sensor
crank sensor
relays
temp sensor
coil
plugs
She is a 4/1996 (built 11/,95) Australian spec XJ Cherokee Sport L6 & AW4-owned last 24 years NOW A GARDEN ORNAMENT / MONEY PIT !!
Any suggestions, however outlandish will be tried?
Thanks for reading this far and not laughing!!

Is this the same burnt ECM?
The ECM controls the ASD relay, keeping it closed for a short time after you turn off the key to allow the computer to shut down properly, store the values it needs to, rather than just bang, lights out. My first car had a similar issue and I did the exact same thing, used a relay hooked to the ignition switch to power the ASD relay when the computer wouldn't any more. It ran for a little while until it just went to crap. The technicians at the dealer were pretty impressed that 16 yr old me, but didn't cut me a break on the $$$ bill.
A 1.5 amp short is a big deal. While it may just be a random thing that parts of the ECM burnt up, I'd do an exhaustive look at the related wiring before plugging in a new ECM. Other than that, pulling fuses is an easy way to narrow down the system with the short it in, then it's just a matter of deciding whether you can wire around it or whether you need to replace it.

step 1) This site has the '96 FSM as a free download, its an absolute must
Manuals: Contributions Inbox : Free Texts : Free Download, Borrow and Streaming : Internet Archive
2) If you have the car from original the A5 sized in-car handbook has the fuse locations but 95-96 changed so they are not always correct
Using a mirror, light and camera, you can ID and check every fuse end in internal and external fuse boxes, use a test light
Next, fix known faults first, I use a test light between battery + and power cable, pull each fuse under bonnet
If the light does not go out, pull each fuse in cabin ( the photos u took earlier may come in handy here, as fuse numbers are identified, but easy to misplace
If that does not work, you will need to pull all unfused circuits identified by the FSM
I would start with the wire to alt, then PCM fuse, be systematic
report your findings
1.5A is a big draw, but not a direct short
