Underhood Light (factory) Is it on a timer?
When I open the hood of our 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ, the factory installed light on the passenger side comes on. If I don't close the hood, I find later it turned off. Is that just a loose wire or was it designed that way to save the battery from discharge? Thank you.

The one in my '98 stays on indefinitely. It's just a little gravity switch. I you have an incandescent bulb in there, maybe the switch contacts are dirty and expansion due to heat is causing the circuit to break.

My'88 will stay on until I close the hood or the battery dies. If I need to do some extended work (anything more than a fluid check) in the engine compartment, I disconnect it.
