Unknown Sound?
Hello,
I have a 94' Cherokee and I've had it for about 6 months and I've replaced a couple things on it. I've replaced the water pump, clutch, air intake, and brake pads. Clutch was more recent as well as brake pads. Yesterday I noticed a weird sound while driving. Like metal scraping against metal. It comes up more often when turning but other than that there is really no pattern to it. Yesterday afternoon I took it to Midas and they said it was the rotars and brake pads. So I went to oreilly and bought some new brake pads and put them on. But the noise is still there. Does anybody have any idea what this could be? Everything runs and it drives fine. Clutch doesn't feel any different but I would like to fix it. Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't had this problem on my jeep yet, but on my old car i did. It ended up being the dust shields on the brakes. I just pushed them back a little and it went away.

From a short drive around the block a couple times I've found it makes the sound when I'm turning and applying the brakes at the same time. Weather I'm in or out of gear. Which makes me go back on what I thought, an issue with the clutch. Any thoughts?

I could be wrong, it's happened (once), but usually if you are getting a noise like that at the front that goes away when you turn the wheel one way or another, doesn't it end up being wheel bearing related? this has always been the case in my personal experience at least.

I second brake dust shields. If you bump the shield with the wheel when taking it off...easy to do. I'd do that first. My old nissan did this no matter what, always left side and in reverse.

........ Which is consistent with a problem that is related to components driven by your axel, such as your brake rotor running against your stone shields. It's pretty easy to check them. On older vehicles those shields deteriorate, get moved easily and can rub on your rotor. Check it out. Give each one a little bend away from the rotor and see if that takes care of the noise. That would be a no cost fix. Always check out that stuff first.
