Default update: i had a mechanic look at it and this is what he said

So my key is stuck in the ignition. it was stuck in there when i bought it and im pretty sure that its not even the right key. So anyway he says he thinks that because the key doesnt come out and turn off the ignition switch that it had just worn down my battery. I told him that the problem is that the battery doesnt charge. i took in the old alternator and it failed. so i replaced it. and i had the battery charged and tested and it passed the load test. But still no charge ive tested every wire and the terminals and alll the ground wires and still nothing is wrong there. Ever since i submerged the front end it hasent charged. I tested the newest alt and it passed. Sooo i doubt the ignition has anything to do with it. I got the key out but didnt get the ignition switch turned off. Thoughts?

Look for a fuse link to the alternator. Could have blown it when submerged.

Fuse link is not a fuse. Check all the wires to the alternator, if one feels soft or crunchy, that's your fusible link. It will probably look like it's spliced in. Replace it with a piece of fusible link wire and you should be ok. Make sure it's fusible link wire, it's not the same as regular wire. NAPA or whatever should sell it by the foot.

i couldn't anything about a fuse link in my Chilton book, and i haven't encountered one on my Jeep yet. If i remember correctly, Ford had them terminated directly on the back of the Alternator.

According to Autozone, Jeep Fuse Links look like this...

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...Name=Fuse+Link

Hope this helps!

the fusable link should be in the wiring harness to the alternater. I had the same problem as you once. Turned out the plug in the firewall behind the fusebox was the culprit. Took it apart cleaned the connections and everything worked fine.

When the vehicle is running, does the voltage gauge show a charge? And have you had the alt load tested while the jeep is running

Fusable links checked out fine. The voltage meter shows no charging just droppin the charge when its running The stock alt. failed the test the second alternator broke while driving and the the third alt. tested out fine

Not sure when it got added, but my '01 has a temp sensor under the battery plate that sends feedback info to the ECM to control battery charging. There is a 'battery high temp' and a 'battery low temp' OBDCII code. It should be throwing one of those if that's the problem.
