Default Upgrade to cast rotors?

I have a 99 XJ that I just purchased (production date 5/99) and I'm assuming that I have the composite rotors. I need to change out the wheel hubs and I was wondering if I can use the cast rotors (with the correct wheel hub) and not have to replace the calipers/pads. I've been searching the forum and so far, it appears that I can. Am I correct in this assumption?

After 20 years of driving a modified Samurai I finally put it out to pasture and found this XJ with only 90K and no rust. I'm new to wrenching on the XJ's, however my wife has a WJ, stepson has a 2000 XJ as does my daughter. I'm not completely unfamiliar with Jeeps but I have a lot to learn.

I prefer to do my own work time and weather permitting. I was wondering what the dealer would charge for a wheel hub replacement. Now I have both time and weather working against me (as well as age) and if the dealer price doesn't break the bank I might farm it out to them.....

Any thoughts on this? Thanks.....

All Good Medicine,
Crow

According to my manual, the caliper part no's for the '97 and '01 models are the same.

Thanks Rob. It appeared that way to me, but I wanted to check with those more experienced than myself.......

I'm certainly not experienced, except looking at manuals.

Changing hubs is not a hard job to do though.

Buy drilled and slotted rotors and the hubs from eBay... they are a ton cheaper then even local parts stores... you can buy the drilled and slotted rotors for half the price of only one rotor from Autozone... huge difference in stopping... when its time I replace all of mine with only drilled and slotted... as for hubs even eBay's have warranties and there half the price of Autozone... take it all to a small mechanic and let them do it... its not hard at all and just about anyone with a wrench can get it right...

I did buy drilled rotors for my Zook on E-Bay and had no issues when I did the rear disc conversion. However, being that this is uncharted territory for me and I'll probably go with the cast version hubs, I'll feel more comfortable if anything goes amok I can resolve it locally and faster than any online transaction. For me, down time isn't an option. This luxury does come at a price and that's the way I'll probably have to go......

The local Napa has their premium rotors for $35 ea. Not too shabby.....

Well, I just might have to rethink my position and search a bit harder on E-Bay......

I pulled the trigger and ordered Mopar wheel hubs (for cast rotors) and drilled/slotted rotors (cast). With any luck swapping to cast rotor/hubs will work out. From everything I've read it "should". I need to find a 12pt 36mm socket. Will an average air impact wrench (1/2") have the ***** to break the nut free?

Any brake pad recommendations to use with the above rotors?

at least semi-metallic pads... if you got the funds get metallic... your jeep will stop on a dime... get them local... i know autozone once they wear out because of the life time warranty you bring the old worn out pads and they replace for free... buy one time and be done... if you have other cherokees that share the same brake pads you can even take those in and swap them out as they dont know the difference... although moraly wrong... lol

I tried the local auto stores (Advanced & Napa). No dice. I'll try a larger Napa that's a couple of towns from me. If I strike out I'll order one on online....

We live in a rural area. Not much of anything around yet like it that way. It does have certain inconveniences, but the benefits of country living offset them......
