Had an old Diesel Mercedes 240D spring an oil leak on a road trip and drained the pan without ever knowing it was leaking. We made it to within a mile from home and the engine locked up. Let it cool and it drove the rest of the way home but the #1 bearing, rod, and crank journal was annihilated. Strange thing is, it would sit and idle great from cold but once it warmed up it had a sharp squealing noise.
Just a quick update, the friend whose place my XJ is sitting at right now has a family mechanic who does tons of jeep work. He originally said I could have him pull the crankshaft and rods, machine them, pop in new piston rings and reassemble. Does that sound reasonable? Otherwise he mentioned I could get a parts vehicle or eBay motor and swap it, then I can keep my '01 engine to stroke it...

Sounds to me like he is advocating throwing your money into a worn-out engine.
When it blows up again he gets to make more money doing it again.
If you don't care if your Jeep is FIXED properly, and you have plenty of money and time to waste, go for it.
I have seen a lot of half-assery out of so-called mechanics. They like to do minimal work for maximum money.

I did man, thanks. Was lucky enough to have a friend take the time to come help me out, and even let me leave the jeep at their place for a few weeks if need be.
Yea I'm probably gonna get a JKQ motor off eBay from a 97 - 99 and rebuild with new seals. They warranty it for 6 months. Maybe start my stroker build in my old motor on the side
I understand what you're saying, I won't rebuild this one like that. At the time he was suggesting it, I just had to be on the road ASAP, so that was the one potential option. Now I've left it at a friend's place and I'll get a donor motor online somewhere.
I definitely do care that my jeep is fixed properly
