Urgent mileage insight needed
I'm looking at a stock 97 xj Sport with 184k miles on it and don't know enough about the xj lifespan to know what it is worth. I don't know anything about the vehicle's history so I realize that it is just an odds game, but what is the lifespan of this era of xj? I'm looking for a DD so stock is OK but I don't have enough experience or know how to pull an engine or tranny.
Please let me know what the average lifespan of an XJ is before major mechanical issues. I promise to use a grain of salt since it is all individual difference and preventative maintenance.
I found a thread about lifespan and that has been very helpful, but any additional advice/experience is greatly appreciated. This is urgent since I may be test driving it and making an offer tomorrow.

Anything with close to 200k could have some mechanical issues. But Jeeps are easy to work on and you have us. Life span I have seen plenty at over 300k so it just depends on how you take care of it.
Value of it now there is alot of unknowns but if it is a 97 with 180k and good body no rust i would say 2500-3000 is a good price to pay.

My dads has around 98, mine has 147, one of my brothers has 180 and the other has 240 on the cherokee's. A freind of mine has around 340 on his and he drives it daily at a round trip of at least 60 miles. Mind you I had to put a new motor in mine since the PO failed to notice the overheating problem. The other thing to remember is that if the vehicle was towed like mine was then your going to have allot less miles then what is actually on the rig, sorta speak.
I would venture to say if the rest of the jeep is in good shape its likely it has been taken care of as far as maintenance. A good cherokee should run till around 300K if taken care of right.

The 4.0L engine is a tank, it would probably last well over 2.3M miles, but it all depends on how it was taken care of. I have a 94 with 192k, and it was garage kept and is in great shape. We've owned it since new, oil changes every 3000, the only thing was rust since we live in the land of salt. If you get a good deal, go for it!
