You may have a wire broken or corroded internally, under the insulation.
I would get a new main negative ground cable in the thickest gauge I could find and replace that one first.
Get it from NAPA or O'Reilly's if possible.

When you pulled the head you left the batt(-) cable loose on the block, on the battery post, or the connectors on the end is broken.
Try using a regular battery jumper cable - jump from batt(-) post to engine ground. Things will work fine then.
It's something simple!

Yes. After double checking, there are only 2 wires that go to the starter (solenoid). One is a big power wire which feeds into the positive battery terminal, the other is a small brown wire that attaches to the solenoid via a connector. I had previously unplugged the connector and upon making conact to the post on the solenoid with the power wire the starter had started spinning automatically. I did this again last night when my friend stated that he though the starter started spinning without the solenoid making a sound to kick it over to the starter. After thinking about what this meant for minute we were convinced that the connector, which I beleive acts like a switch to transfer the power from the solenoid to the starter, was getting bypassed some how. The only way wecould see this hapening is if the solenoid was stuck internally. We tried to open it up on a bench to verify if our thinking was right but we were starting to strip the screws and couldn't get them off. We ended up running up to Advanced and bought a Reman for like a buck 60. Brought it back and installed it and the same thing happened on the Reman. I know Reman isn't the best product on the market but I assumed that it was in good working order and the fact that we had the same symptom with a new reman as we did with the old one lead me to assume there was nothing wrong with my old starter. So, I took the new one off and reinstalledd te old starter. Only this time wen I touched he positive wire to the post nothing happened. The starter didn't just start spinning automatically. Weird but good. Since it wasn't freaking out on me I continued to hook up the old starter and was able to start the car great. I'm a little conerned that I don't know what I did to make the problem stop but, I am releived that everything seems to be working correctly. My guess is that the switch to both the old and new starter where stuck somehow and that's why they were starting automatically whn I touched the power to them? Either that or there was some weird ground issue that resolved itself on my third attempt of unsecuring and resecuringg every connector and ground in my engine bay. I'll eep you guys posted if it happens again but thanks for the help (mental)

Ok, so you unplugged the small wire and it still did it? If I read correctly? If that is the case the starter solenoid was stuck. Go somewhere besides advance/ auto zone for electrical compenents.
