I appreciate all of the replies guys. If it is that rare for the AW4 to go bad, do you think it would be worth a gamble draining the fluid and changing the filter? Otherwise, I am going with a used transmission. I found one at a junkyard near me with 97,000 miles for cheap from a 2000 XJ ($200).

Sometimes an AW4 "transmission problem" is really an electrical problem. Not saying that's the case with yours, but curious about the possibility.
If you do pull one from the scrapyard, check the dipstick for varnish, burned fluid smell or any other nastiness. There aren't many checks you can do before installing it, but that is one. You might slap an ohmmeter across the solenoids too, just to verify they are in spec.

Sorry I didn't tell the symptoms. The vehicle did not want to take off and the check engine light came. It almost acted as the Jeep was skipping first gear. After it finally took off it shifted through the gears. Goes through P, R, N, D just fine. I had it scanned at a local auto shop and they said there were two transmission codes. I am taking it to an actual transmission shop tomorrow. Hopefully, I will find out more.

Bluegress, don't go to the shop! You lucked out with some supper help. (Howdy Chuck!) (and all). Radi and the forum can ...well (Now I'm just listening), can tell us, (or link?), how to check the solenoids.
The TPS and the kick-down cable are right....

No sir but we are not talking about the damage to the driver. But you're technically correct since there won't be much left of any vehicle if you hit a stationary object at 100 mph. That AW4 will probably land in someone's front yard about a mile down the road....

Had the codes checked today. Ending up being one of the solenoids in the transmission. The guy said there were two of them that usually went bad and that he would replace them both since he would already have the trans pan off. The job could be completed, parts and labor, for around $200. This is a reputable transmission shop, so I told him to have at it. Definitely a better outcome than I had imagined. He told me he rarely has to rebuild these transmissions, but he has to replace these solenoids every so often and that was about the only trouble he sees out of them.

Hey! That's about a tenth of what I thought they would ask. I suppose it's two late, but there are three solenoids and any one of them can fail. Sounds like you came out OK though.

Yeah, I definitely trust this transmission guy. I am going with what he told me. I am just glad I asked the members of this forum or I would have just replaced the transmission. Thanks fellas for all the help. Saved me about $500.
