Default using Selec-Trac

Hi all,
Brand new to the forum. I have just bought an 95 cherokee sport. The kids and I went up in the hills for the maiden voyage and had a blast. have some questions using the selec-trac. It went from 2wd to full time perfectly, but when i wanted to back to 2wd it went to part time for a couple of miles before fully disengaging. can someone give me a procedure on how to properly us the 4x4 and also is a couple of miles in part time on dry pavement going to do any damage? thanks for the help.

You can put the jeep from 2wd to 4wd High while the jeep it moving. To go to 4wd Low , you must stop, neutral, then put it in 4wd Low, and then repeat that process in reverse to get it out.

If when you take it out of 4wd and you think it is not fully disengaged, just put the Jeep in reverse (while in 2wd) and roll back a few feet. That should do it to disengage.

As for the part time read your manual. Some people try to use that in patchy snow on the road and you can brake your t-case doing that. Never use any 4-wheel drive on pavement unless its worth a few $$$ and a few hours in the shop.

it is the same basic operation. In a straight line ,No it will not damage the 4wd system, just do not do alot of turning where the wheels can't slip.

The 242 has a feature that the 231 does NOT.

With a selec-trac case (NP242), you can use Fulltime 4WD on ANY road surface, including dry pavement. With Parttime 4WD, you need to be on a road surface that has "slippage" like sand, snow, ice.

However, 2 miles in part time without turning should not have damaged anything.

One thing I have seen with a disengagement problem is to ensure that all 4 tires are of the same air pressure. If one is low, it can hinder disengagement.

Otherwise, it should pop in and out in a short bit and you may have to let off the gas a time or two.

Still problematic, be sure to EXERCISE your transfer case every couple of months or so and be sure the transfer case has a fresh bath of Dex/Merc ATF fluid in it.
