Default V6 fuel pump question

1984 Jeep Wagoneer (Cherokee)
2.8L V6, Auto, 4wd

I dropped my fuel tank today since it is leaking. I plan on letting it air out a few weeks then refurbish it. I have read that the 2.8L with the 2bbl carb should have the mechanical fuel pump on it. If so, my question is 'what is this thing on the tank?'. It looks like a fuel pump, or is it the fuel gauge sending unit or something?

I had enough fun for the day so I haven't removed it yet.

Yes those are for the fuel gauge sending unit. If it had an electric in-tank fuel pump, there would be three wires.

WARNING. It's Very Important when removing the sending unit to use a brass drift or punch to keep from making any sparks. Any sparks could cause an explosion when combined with the fumes that remain in the tank.

And that would be bad.
