The AW-4 XJ auto tranny will not hold up to the abuse of a V-8. IDK if there is even an adapter plate available to do it. And yes, the swap would be hard, but has, and can be done. You'd have to source an entire drive train to accomplish your goal. HTH!!

The AW4 is not a transmission I would put behind a V8. Most any Chevy small block will fit into the engine bay of an XJ but will still require a lot of work to make it fit. If you want to stick witansmh an auto transmission, you're better off getting a Chevy trans. The Jeep AX-15 manual transmission is the only Jeep tranny suitable to mount to a V8.

Advance adapters sells the headers and the bolt in motor mounts but you will have to swap the whole chevy drivetrain. I am in the process of preparing for this or a vortec v6 in my 85 Cherokee. I have seen several 4.0 swapped Cherokees and everyone I talk to says that it is an extremely challengingly and costly expenditure.

Ohh but if you are looking to keep a jeep drivetrain I believe there is an adapter to go from a V8 to a Jeep 5 speed.

Good luck your gonna need it. I plan on doing a complete write up with pictures when I swap out my V6 and you should do the same because I have heard alot of people asking about the difficulty in swapping the 4.0.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, because I really don't know, lol.

I think your right green classic. I also have had no such luck locating an adapter.

I believe it would if its in good shape. Its stronger than people take it for. No V8 will bolt up to it w/o a custom adpater of some sort.. I dont think novak makes AW4 adapters.

Anyway, theres no point in putting a V8 in an XJ IMHO. Theres no "kit" or "writeup" to follow, so If youre doing it, you better not be diving when you cant swim.

Exactly considering a comprable stroker motor can be built and put in for considerably less. Hell you can build a stroker to 5.0 and put out more power:torque than most stock V8's, may not be as reliable but it can be done. Plus you don't have to worry about fabbing this and fabbing that, it'll drop right in

x2 on the stroker suggestion. A bored and stroked 4.0L can be a pretty powerful beast, and where it would likely outshine a V8 would be the availability of huge torque numbers at a very low RPM. It may not have that "cool v8 sound" but it sure would be a lot easier to accomplish and more economical to do. For any and all stroker questions check out:

It the spot for Jeep stroker info...

IF you do a V8 swap, the easiest would probably be to get a donor ZJ. Because you could use the engine/trans/t-case
