Default vacuum disconnect button in dash

Hey all, I just purchased another cherokee but this is my first Renix. It's an 87 Pioneer. Someone installed an air valve/button thing into the dash and I was hoping you all could explain how it works. iirc this is for the front axle vacuum? The **** will spin and tighten but if i spin it too far it releases the air. There is also a big red button on the front of it.

From you short description, it sounds like the control for a posi-lok differential locker.

Follow it to it's other end. Likely passenger side of front axle. snap a few pics. Also, let's see pics of your transfer case shift indicator.

I don't know about that. The pic showed up fine.

I'm guessing it's a Posi-Lock cable that can be trashed and set to something more reliable.

Pic of axle area for confirmation.

What makes you think it's air operated by the way?

I can spin the **** and it builds pressure. Releases if I spin too far. And I’m pretty sure I can hear it leaking air when I stop if I leave it loose.
