I believe it goes to the Vac switch on the back filter housing to open the hot air valve on the front of the filter housing..But it could be the EGR soliniod hose.

Thanks! Which filter housing are you talking about?

On my 88, that is a vacuum line that run to the back of the top of the air filter housing. My guess is that they have oil coming into their air filter. (very common problem) and that's how they "fixed" it.

So is there anything wrong with leaving it like it is?

That I can't answer but I just went ahead and fixed that particular issue I was having by using this guide

http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/tech/c...ter-19834.html

Saved some dough by getting the parts from rockauto instead of the dealer

Your blocked line hooks to one of the 2 connectors on the back end of the air filter canister. It's the one closest to the engine.

And no, that won't affect your cruise or vents. Under the passenger side rear of the front bumper is a vacuum storage cannister that looks kinda like a football. The lines to it run from up near the firewall, next to the battery, and down to it. They are very prone to getting eaten by battery acid. Look there first.

Is the hot air tube from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner housing still on your XJ? Do you have emissions inspection?
If Yes to either then you should to fix it
If No to both then don't worry about it

If you're asking about the other line from the back of the airfilter canister, it goes to a valve on the other end of the canister
