Is that for a "dry engine" ?
The engine is on the stand, I filled it with oil and ran the pump with a drill for 2-3 minutes,, oil flowed from all pushrods and was holding 50lb on a mech gauge.
I will probably prime it again about 2-3 before firing.

I don't know. It just says DO NOT operate above idle until all lifters are oiling.

Default Valve adjustment on 4.0

In my youth, when rebuilding a non adjustable hyd lifter engine, we just torqued to spec and called it a day.
The 4.0 rebuild "books" do not discuss any "adjustments" .
I remember reading a thread here about someone running into problems because after a block and head rebuild the valve train was out of spec?? and I thought someone in the know said something about shimming??

Can someone point me in the right direction?
there absolutely is an adjustment that needs to be checked and done on All 4.0 hydraulic lifter flat tapper 99-04 and others. It’s called PRE-LOAD. the amount of travel of the pushrods needs to be measured by making a mark on the pushrod when the cam lobes are down and valves completely closed. Make a mark in some fashion or put a piece of masking tape on the pushrods and make a mark and measure the distance from that mark to a fixed point like the valve cover bolt flange on the head. Now install the rocker arm and tighten to spec. Now remeasure the mark on the tape you made as the pushrod should have moved down putting preload on the hydraulic lifter. The difference in the measurements is how far down the pushrod has pushed the top of the hydraulic lifter down. That is your preload. You’ll have to look up that spec because I can’t remember what it is right now. You do this WITHOUT PUMPING UP THE LIFTERS. you do NOT pre pump lifters in these engines. You let the engine do that once all of this procedure is done amd you start the engine up. If you pre pump up the lifters you will not be able to do this important setup procedure. Pressure must be drained from the lifters to do this check. If the rocker arm doesn’t push the lifter down enough to the preload spect then you shim the rocker on the bottom where the bolt goes through. Shim kits are available. If the pushrod preloads the lifter too much then you need to get shorter pushrods to start over and make these adjustments. Pushrod lengths are available. This is the correct way to set up the preload (valve adjustment) on the lifter on these non adjustable rocker arms.

who cares if it’s an old post Mr big guy who thinks he is the gate keeper.
The info is good forever. And from all the posts from other people who say incorrectly to just bolt the rockers down and your done obviously don't have a clue about this procedure either so there are many more folks on here that need the info. Not just the original poster. really hate it when people feel the need to spout off and contribute nothing but brainless posts like “this is an old
post so don’t comment on it”. Reading endless posts where all these people say just bolt the rockers down and no adjustment necessary just because there are not rocker adjustment nuts is bad info. like they know what they are doing but don’t can cause others to create engine problems by giving out false info IS A REASON TO POST correct info in an older post.
