You found me!

I was told seafoam is a good solvent when mixed with the oil. I've been told to go the diesel oil route, kerosene, and seafoam. Seafoam seemed to be the most suggested. I'm not sure how aggressive diesel oil will be, and i'm not sure if being more aggressive is necessarily a good thing.

I'm open to suggestions..

I can't wait to pull the pan.

Since I tend to have a gob of diesel oil around at any given time I've been considering doing this...

Are you running just the straight Rotella 15w-40?? I've always been on the fence about synthetics.. so I've never tried the T5-6

what exactly do you mean diesel oil, kerosene and seafoam???

btw most people suggest seafoam but maybe 3% know anything about it, you will need to remove most the gunk by hand.... maybe use a can of brakekleen or even your seafoam aerosol for a final once over after everything is removed in both your head and pan..

btw seafoam is mixed with oil, fact is most of it is oil, eatable oil at that... Mineral oil !!! naptha (mineral spirits) and rubbing alcohol... that's it !!

I use SeaFoam for regular maintenance. When I need something "more aggressive", I use Breyman's Chemtool. On old dodge 6's, the ones that have a sludge valve cover under the valve cover, I use kerosine and motor oil. I think one of the biggest causes of the 4.0 sludge is these engines don't get hot enough to keep them clean. Short trips are the worst.

You run it all the time? I've never heard of that, but then again I'm from the world of sports cars. I'll give this a try then. How does it do in the cold? It is about 20F here in Ohio.

Also, I am scrubbing this by hand. I have fab'd an extension for my shop vac and I am knocking things loose and sucking the mess up. My plan is to run seafoam in the oil for about 20 miles, and then I think I will switch out the oil and filter with diesel oil (delo 15w40, not sure what that is but is mentioned above).

I will probably drop the pan before doing this as well. fml.

how often do you think I should change the oil after I get all this garbage loose. 500 miles?

Rotella 15-40 year round here with Wix or Napa Gold filters. I see 0* in winter and 100* in summer.

They're all insane.

Use cheap 5W-30 motor oil and a Motorcraft FL1A filter during the desludge process. FL1A only costs about $4.00.

Then switch to Rotella T6, 5W-40, and a Wix 51515 filter after it looks like the desludge oil starts looking clean.

the biggest cause of sludge in any engine is poor maintenance. 10,000 mile oil changes, ect...

Had to replace my valve cover gasket at 185,000... I was surprized to find everything under it was really clean... No sign of sludge anywhere, no deposits at all... I changed my oil at 3k increments for the first 150k miles and then switched to 5k... Now here's the part that will really turn ya off, I have used PH16 filters ever since it was new... The OEM filter was on for only the first 500 miles...

If your rings suck and let a ton of fuel into the oil, the gasoline has a pretty thorough cleaning action
