I reused my original gasket when I put my new head on a couple of weeks ago. I cleaned it well on both sides and used a thin film of sealer. It looked like it could be reused many times and continue sealing. It was not hard or brittle and still in one piece. I've spent too much on the XJ lately including $900 unexpectedly getting pulled out of the mud about 25 miles off highway in the desert.

Just to update. Using the Felpro grommets along with the OEM metal washers (i guess) there were no leaks. Now on to the rest of the self lubricating wonder that is the XJ.

gave me a good laugh! I was just thinking the other day "maybe I shouldn't fix my last oil drip... control arms would probably start squeaking, and what if that's what's keeping the floor/frame rust at bay???"
On topic: I never thought to try separating the metal from the plastic in the washers since it didn't look dried out. I'll probably try that next time though!
