According to my manual there is no valve lash adjustment on your engine. If you've got excessive clearance/play in your rockers causing noise, you need to check to see whether it's worn/damaged rockers, a lifter problem or a cam lobe wear issue. JMO

Your profile doesn't have any info about your Jeep. What year is your Cherokee? It has the 4.0L correct?

Valves closed, torque pivot screws to 19 pound-feet. The valvetrain is hydraulic, and has theoretically zero lash iin operation. Checking clearances at rest would be invalid.

The lifter knock at idle is a common thing with a high miles 4.0 engine. Really the only thing you can do is try one the many aftermarket oil treatments to quiet it down or change out your lifters. If you're going dig into the cam and lifters you may as well rebuild the whole motor. I bought my XJ 4 years ago with 185K on the ticker. It had a lifter knock at idle then. It now has 248K on the ticker and still has the lifter knock at idle but anything off idle and she quiets right down an purrs like a kitten. I guess it's a Jeep thing. I won't tear my 4.0 down until I start seeng blue smoke or if it justs grenades one day when I'm flogging it off road.
